He sailed from Liverpool to Montreal aboard the Duchess of York (possibly), took the train to Toronto and was sent to a dairy farm. |

Thereafter I do not know what happened to him, the last report from Barnardo
was dated 1909 saying he re visited Leonard Parker in the winter of 1908/9
and was working as a "Firer" on the railways.
Family lore says he joined the CEF during WW1 and died in France, but this
is not proven. |

Lindsay. She was born in Glasgow, Scotland, March 24, 1881 and came to
Canada with the Quarrier's organization at age 3 aboard the ship SS Buenos
Ayrean arriving June 19, 1884. I have received information from Quarriers
that indicates she was placed with a Mrs. Eliza Miller in Warminster,
Ontario (this location I am not positive of). She may have grown up around
the Toronto area. She married William James Reid of Orangeville, Ontario

William said that he "came from Abergavenny", but he also said that he was from England and was born in Prescot, Lancashire (not found in the registers in London record office). May have been sent to Hillfoot Farm, Demsey Corner, Kings Co., NS in 1886, at the age of 3 years, by Emma Stirling's "Edinburgh & Leith Children's Aid & Refuge Society". Mary Ann was placed in 3 different homes in 1903 & copies of her letters to the agent Cecil Arden make reference to Father Banns and a Miss Brennan. My grandmother worked in homes in St John, Notre Dame de Grace and Ile Brizzard. From what I heard she lived in Montreal and at one point worked as a cook in a lumber camp with a friend named Rose.

Hellen Jean was brought (back?) to England where she was in The Mission of Hope formerly known as The Haven of Hope and the Haven for Homeless Little Ones founded by Mrs. Ransome Wallis in Croydon London. She was "adopted" from there by a Mrs. Hopwood possibly via a Baptist agency of some kind. No birth records can be found in England although the handwritten note made at the time says registered in London.
Suggest that its possible that her mother, Hellen Tombs, was taken to Canada
when she was pregnant and unmarried and the child either brought home by
her or sent home to be placed in the home at Croydon. She always claimed
that she recalls the boat journey and that she was in the company of a women
who she assumed was her mother. |
